Castine, Maine - SUNY Canton prevailed, 3-1, over Northern Vermont-Johnson in the semifinal round of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Women's Volleyball Championship tournament.
The Roos will face #1 Maine Maritime, who are returning to the conference title match for the 13th year in a row, and are on the hunt for their fifth-straight championship trophy. The championship match is Sunday, November 10th at noon in Smith Gymnasium on the Maine Maritime campus in Castine, Maine. The Badgers see their most successful season in program history come to a close at 13-12.
Canton got out to an early lead in the first set, and held biggest differential at 16-10. NVU-Johnson fought back and brought the score to within one at 18-17. The Roos then scored five points in a row on their way to a 25-21 victory. The second set saw the score tied nine times as the #2 Roos and #3 Badgers battled on the court. The lead changed several times before Canton pulled away from a 16-17 deficit with eight straight points and the eventual 25-18 win and 2-0 lead.
NVU-Johnson took an early lead in the third set that saw the two teams tied seven times before the Badgers pulled away for a 25-19 win to bring the match score to 2-1. Canton jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fourth set and never looked back, taking the set 25-18, and the match 3-1.
Second Team All-Conference player Lauren Havill (Gainsville, Va.) led the Badgers with a match-high 16 kills, and also tallied 5 digs and a service ace. First Team All-Conference selection Nikola Knapova (Presov, Slovakia) had nine kills, ten digs, two assists, one ace, and three block assists. NAC Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Conference member Porsche Johnson (Dallas, Texas) contributed six kills, one ace, one dig, and two block assists. Mason Lores (Englewood, Colo.) had a match-high 32 assists, as well as 12 digs, and two kills.
For Canton, NAC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference selection Jenna Roat (Penfield, N.Y.) led all players with 26 digs, and also chipped in three kills and an assist. Tatum Lafrance (Akwensasne, N.Y.) tallied ten kills, eight digs, and two block assists; while Skye Hansen totaled nine kills, three digs, and one ace. Second Team All Conference member Brynna Harris (Mead, Colo.) notched 15 assists and six kills for the Roos, while Ashton Houppert (Lowville, N.Y.) totaled a team-high 21 assists.
