NEAC East Women's Tennis Weekly Honors

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Kate Bucci, Castleton
(Jr., - Warwick, R.I.)
Bucci earned Most Valuable Player honors in the NEAC East Division Championship, leading Castleton to its second-straight title. Bucci teamed with Michelle Podnecky for an 8-3 win in first doubles and also earned a 6-0, 6-1 win in second singles. Bucci put the finishing touches on a solid junior campaign, going 9-3 in singles and a perfect 13-0 in doubles action with Podnecky.

NEAC East Women's Tennis Weekly Honors

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Michelle Podnecky, Castleton State College
(Junior, - Bridgewater, Vt.)
In one match this week, Podnecky led Castleton to 9-0 victory over Johnson St. earning a 6-1, 6-0 win in first singles and an 8-1 triumph in first doubles with teammate Kate Bucci. Podnecky has not lost a first singles match since 9/19 spanning seven-straight victories and in doubles Bucci and Podnecky have not lost a first doubles match this season (11 straight wins).

 

 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Kayla Flynn, Lyndon State College
(Freshman, - Johnston, R.I.)
Despite dropping a hard-fought 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 (11-9) decision to Plymouth's Molly Heartfield in fourth singles on Wednesday, Oct. 6, Flynn rebounded from the loss with a 8-3 win in No.2 doubles. Teaming with Maria Parr, she is currenlty 6-0 on the season and 7-1 overall in doubles play. Flynn is also a respectable 5-3 in singles action.

Michelle Podnecky, Castleton State College
(Junior, - Bridgewater, Vt.)
Podnecky went undefeated in singles and doubles play for the second-straight week extending Castleton's winning streak to nine-straight matches. On Thursday against MCLA, Podnecky took her first singles match 6-2, 6-0 and teamed up with Kate Bucci for an 8-1 victory in doubles. Versus Johnson St. on Saturday, Podnecky won in first singles 6-0, 6-2 and won first doubles with Bucci 8-2. On Sunday, Podnecky led the Spartans to a 7-2 victory over Lyndon St. winning first singles 6-2, 6-1 and in doubles she and Bucci won 8-1.

Podnecky went undefeated in singles matches and doubles play this past week guiding Castleton to a 2-0 mark overall and 1-0 conference record. Against Plymouth St. on Wednesday, Podnecky won first singles 6-1, 7-5 and teamed up with Kate Bucci for an 8-2 victory in doubles. On Saturday versus conference opponent, Thomas, Podnecky went 6-0, 6-0 in singles and 8-1 in doubles with Bucci.

Kayal Flynn, Lyndon State College
(Freshman, - Johnston, RI)
Flynn surged to 5-1 in both singles and doubles play with a pair of victories against Johnson and Becker. In Thursday's match with the Badgers, Flynn defeated Kim Blakeman 6-0, 6-1 before teamming with Maria Parr to record a 8-2 win over Rebecca Quarantiello and Katelyn Breault in second doubles. On Sunday, Flynn moved up to No. 2 singles and recorded a hard-fought 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 victory over the Hawks' Laura Mimms. She and Parr closed out the day with an 8-6 win in second doubles over Mimms and Megan Nessen.

Brittni Racine, Castleton State College
(Senior, - Leicester, Vt.)
Racine highlighted a 2-0 week overall for Castleton earning a 6-0, 6-0 victory in first singles over Thomas on 9/18. Against Lyndon St. on the following day, Racine won her fourth singles match 6-0, 6-1 and teamed up with Chelsea Crehan in a second doubles win, 8-6.

Flynn continued her early-season success with victories in both singles and doubles against Johnson State on Saturday. She partnered with teammate Kelsey Johnson to earn a 8-1 victory over Rebecca Quarantiello and Maegan Ploof in second doubles before recording a 6-0, 6-0 win over Emily Miller in No. 3 singles. On Sunday, in a match versus Castleton, Flynn took a hard-fought 7-6, 2-6, 10-8 victory over the Spartans' Kate Bucci in second singles.

Bucci went 1-0 in second singles and 1-0 in doubles with teammate Michelle Podnecky to guide the Spartans to an 8-1 victory over Sage this past week. In second doubles, Bucci won 6-3, 6-3 while in doubles Bucci and Podnecky won 8-3.

Flynn tasted victory in her first matches in a Lyndon uniform, teaming with Maria Parr to earn a hard-fought 9-8 (7-4) victory over UMass-Boston's Wendy Steinman and Destanne Ringler in No. 2 doubles Saturday. The win was the lone Hornet victory of the day. In Sunday's match at Mitchell College, Flynn bested the Mariners' Lauren Rowley 6-2, 6-0 in No. 3 singles before joining Parr for a 8-4 victory in No. 1 doubles over Mackenzie Flanagan and Kelly Walsh.

Michelle Podnecky, Castleton

Podnecky went 1-1 in first singles action and teamed with Kate Bucci for a perfect 2-0 mark in first doubles this week in matches versus Colby-Sawyer and UMass-Boston. Podnecky dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision in Castleton's loss to Colby-Sawyer, but bounced back for a 6-3, 6-3 win over UMass-Boston. Podnecky and Bucci rallied for a 9-8 (8-6) win versus Colby-Sawyer, and breezed to an 8-5 win against the Beacons.
