Castleton wins second-straight NEAC East Title

RUTLAND, Vt. - The Castleton State College women’s tennis team won its second-straight North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division title, defeating Lyndon State College 8-1 in the final at Grand Slam Tennis Center.

With the win Castleton improves to 12-1 overall and earns a spot in the NEAC Championship to be held in May versus the champion of the NEAC West Division with a berth in the NCAA National Tournament at stake. Lyndon’s season ends at 5-6 overall.

Castleton opened up a 3-0 lead after doubles competitions completed, with Michelle Podnecky (Bridgewater, Vt.) and Kate Bucci (Wakefield, R.I.) earning an 8-3 win in first doubles. Brittni Racine (Leicester, Vt.) and Chelsea Crehan (Essex, Conn.) followed with an 8-1 win in second while Kristen McGinn (Harwinton, Conn.) and Alyssa Panasci (Goshen, Conn.) earned an 8-2 victory in third.

In singles action Podnecky cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win first flight, while Bucci added a 6-0, 6-1 victory in second. Racine triumphed 6-3, 6-3 in third single before Lyndon got on the board with a victory in fourth singles. Maria Parr (Montpelier, Vt.) battled to a 7-6 (7-5) win in the opening set, and finished with a 6-0 second set win for the Hornet win. Crehan followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win at fifth singles while McGinn finished off the win 6-1, 6-3.

Crehan wraps up an unblemished singles season, going 12-0, while Podnecky and Bucci won all 13 doubles competitions of the season.

Lyndon advances to NEAC East finals

Lyndon earned a berth in the North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division finals Thursday with a 7-0 victory over Johnson State. The final two singles matches of the day went unfinished due to darkness.

Lyndon's Kayla Flynn topped Johnson's Emily Miller 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 singles and teammate Maria Parr defeated Kim Blakeman 6-3, 6-0 in third singles. In No. 5 singles, the Hornets' Margaret George beat Maegen Ploof 6-4, 6-1 before Kaitlin Cunningham earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory in sixth singles over the Badgers' Catlyn Hughes.

Lyndon's No. 1 singles player Kelsey Johnson and fourth singles competitor Amber Hartman led by scores of 6-4 and 6-2, respectively, when their matches versus Rebecca Quarantiello and Katelyn Breault were called for darkness.

In doubles action, Johnson and Jenn Falsetti teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Blakeman and Miller 8-4. Hartman and Flynn collected an 8-4 win in second doubles over Quarantiello and Breault while Cunningham and Erin Donnelly topped Hughes and Kate Murphy, 8-4, in third doubles play.

With the loss, Johnson ends its season with an overall record of 2-9 and a mark of 2-5 in the NEAC East.

Castleton Enters NEAC East Division Women's Tennis Tournament as Top Seed

The Castleton State College women’s tennis team will enter the 2010 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division Tournament as the top seed.

Second-seed Lyndon State College will square off with third-seed Johnson State College in the opening round of the single-elimination tournament on Thursday, October 14th at 3:30 pm. The winner will meet the top-seeded Spartans on Saturday, October 16th. Thomas College will not compete in the championship.

Beginning with the 2010 season, North Atlantic Conference (NAC) members Castleton, Johnson St., Lyndon St., and Thomas have played in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) as associate members in the East Division.

Each division will hold a championship and the two divisional champions will meet to determine the conference champion. The conference winner will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. The NEAC West Division champion will be determined in the spring after their divisional competition.
