The Colby-Sawyer College men's tennis team defeated Penn St. Berks, 9-0, to win their sixth-straight North Atlantic Conference (NAC)/North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) crossover title on Sunday at Tri-City Tennis Club.
Colby-Sawyer, who defeated the Nittany Lions 9-0 in last year's crossover match, improves to 9-10 and earns the automatic bid to this year's NCAA Tournament. The 2018 NCAA Tournament field will be announced on Monday at noon on NCAA.com. With today's win, Head Coach Barry Schoonmaker has reached 100 career wins with the Colby-Sawyer men's program. Penn St. Berks ends its season at 10-7.
Colby-Sawyer got off to a great start by sweeping doubles play. Junior Alex Wright (St. Austell, Cornwall, England) and senior Andrew Peloquin (Greenville, R.I.) got the Chargers on the board with an 8-2 triumph over seniors Grant Batzer (Lititz, Pa.) and Will Byler (Lancaster, Pa.) at No. 3 doubles. Senior Gustav Jigrup (Gothenburg, Vastra Frolunda, Sweden) and freshman Nick Mathieu (Topsham, Maine) defeated sophomores Mostafa Rahmy (Cairo, Egypt) and Diego Olazagasti (Exeter, Pa.) 8-3 at the top doubles spot to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead. The No. 2 duo of sophomore Matt Burke (Milford, Conn.) and sophomore Cam Lynch (Haverhill, Mass.) made it a sweep by winning their match over sophomore Federico Ochoa (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and freshman Curtis Uhle (Blue Bell, Pa.) by an 8-2 score.
Wright put the Chargers on top 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Rahmy at No. 3 singles.
Peloquin got the match-clinching point for Colby-Sawyer with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Ochoa.
Jigrup battled to a straight-sets victory over Byler at the top flight. The first set was played tightly throughout, but Jigrup came away with a 6-4 win. He took the momentum into the second set and went on for a 6-0 win to take the match.
Mathieu posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Olazagasti at No. 2, while Burke defeated Uhle 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4.
At No. 6, Colby-Sawyer senior Ross Kenney (Hampton Falls, N.H.) gave the Chargers the 9-0 win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Batzer.
